Turmeric, a plant related to ginger is grown throughout India, other parts of Asia, and Central America. Turmeric is a spice that comes from the turmeric plant and it is commonly used in Asian food, and the main spice in curry. But, the root of the turmeric is also used widely to make medicine. Turmeric’s underground stems (rhizomes) are dried and made into capsules, tablets, teas, or extracts.  Today, turmeric is used as a dietary supplement for inflammation; arthritis; stomach, skin, liver, and gallbladder problems; cancer; and other conditions.  Turmeric powder is also made into a paste for skin conditions. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant.
